Trail Tales

Foothills trail

Included in my 9 great hiking videos is the March edition of "Trails less Traveled" was a thru-hike of the Foothills Trail. The Foothills Trail covers nearly 78 miles through South Carolina and even enter North Carolina for several miles. It is filled with beautiful views of mountain ranges, rivers, waterwater rapids, waterfalls, and lakes. It is my favorite hike thus far in 2022, and perhaps my favorite east of the Mississippi. Come on, let's go walking!the

Hey yโ€™all! Dan here. Thanks for joining me. Want to see where Iโ€™ve been and where Iโ€™m going? Here are 9 great hiking videos. Subscribe to my YouTube Channel and see all of my adventures, as well as gear reviews and hacks. Itโ€™s free and you really help me a lot!

ย I was born and raised in Alabama, we were usually outside. We walked with Dad in the woods that surrounded our home.

We learned to hunt, fish, and camp. I joined the military and went to college. Yep, I often did things backwards.

My Army career spanned more than 30 years and I retired as a Colonel.ย I loved my Army experience, but there was a heavy toll on body and spirit.

On the trails, I have found healing for body, mind, and spirit. Come on. Letโ€™s go walking โ€“ together!

Why do I walk?

Iโ€™ve lived in many places in America and Germany. Iโ€™ve traveled to the Great Wall in China, the mountains of northern India, the forest of Angola, and a few places that I donโ€™t want to see again. Except for those few places, I have discovered that creation reserves its greatest beauties for those who will explore her paths.

I started getting serious about backpacking when the COVID lockdowns began in 2020. I felt like everything was closing in and couldnโ€™t breathe. My plan to walk the pilgrimage of the Camino de Santiago fell through.

I turned my attention to the Appalachian Trail. In March of 2021, I left from the arch below Amicalola Falls and started north to Springer Mountain. Eventually, I came off the trail at Standing Bear Farm after hiking through the Smoky Mountains. Family needs changed my hiking plans. I began section hiking through the year.

My book.

Along with these 9 great hiking videos, I even wrote a book during the year. Schooled by the Smokies was born from my experiences on the Appalachian Trail, as well as other hikes I have done through the years.ย

The book includes ten life lessons that helped refocus me along the trail. One of those lessons is “Stay on the Path!” That has become my mantra for living.

Schooled by the Smokies is available through Amazon or Barnes & Noble. I hope you will get a copy and find some things that better your life.

My next steps.

Last year I backpacked โ€œTrails less Traveled.โ€ Each month there was a new trail to explore. Not one of the popular trails well known in the hiking community. I visited places like Isle Royale, the Fiery Gizzard, the Prairie Spirit Trail, and the Flint Hills Trail. Watch and enjoy my YouTube videos of those adventures in unique places.ย

I am an advocate of being outdoors. That is where we can learn a lot about ourselves and life in general. As โ€œDixieโ€ says, โ€œWhether itโ€™s taking an evening stroll, catching lightning bugs or gardening, I think everyone can benefit from smelling the roses now and then!โ€ For me, the trails are places of healing, inner healing. I hope you will discover adventures for yourself and find the healing that restores you too.ย

If you have any questions about hiking/backpacking, come along with myย YouTube videos! I know you will enjoy these 9 great hiking videos.
